Statement by the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Kazakhstan’s Secretary of State – Minister of Foreign Affairs Kanat Saudabayev on the referendum in Kyrgyzstan
The OSCE chairmanship-in-office welcomes the successful holding of a national referendum in Kyrgyzstan symbolizing a decisive step towards political stability, restoration of the constitutional order and the legitimacy of the authorities.
The OSCE is keenly interested in seeing the situation in Kyrgyzstan return to the constructive framework, and, in this connection, calls on all the participating States and the international bodies to develop a plan of large-scale assistance to this country. We believe timely, effective and coordinated actions of the international community will become an important factor of political stabilization, maintaining regional security and cooperation, ensuring sustainable economic development and full protection of democratic foundations in Kyrgyzstan.
The OSCE chairmanship supports preliminary assessments of the referendum by the mission of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
The holding of the referendum is only the beginning of a hard path of restoring the rule of law and further democratic, social and economic development of Kyrgyzstan.
